Trailer: HBO’s Sci-Fi Epic “The Nevers”

The Nevers is one of the most anticipated new sci-fi shows coming out this year. Originally, it was set to have Joss Whedon returning to his roots as a showrunner, with the series hearkening back to his female-empowered Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And while Whedon did significantly develop the project, he left the production amidst the ongoing scandal surrounding his bad behavior on the set of the Justice League reshoots. His replacement, Philippa Goslett, was announced last week, and HBO just premiered the first trailer.

The series follows a group of Victorian women who find themselves with powerful, supernatural abilities and they have to quickly learn how to control them. Them women are quickly surrounded by a group of vicious enemies seeking to gain control of them, all while undertaking a mission that could change the course of the world forever. And all the while, they’ll find themselves persecuted for their new abilities and will fight for the rights of those who are like them.

Laura Donnelly leads the cast as Amalia True, a young and irresponsible witch who’s thrust into a leadership position before she’s ready. She’ll be accompanied by a talented ensemble that includes Ben Chaplin, Olivia Williams, Nick Frost, James Norton, Tom Riley, Ann Skelly, Pip Torrens, Zackary Momoh, Amy Manson, Denis O’Hare, Rochelle Neil, and Eleanor Tomlinson.

This premise has a lot of promise and seems like a story that would have been right up Joss Whedon’s alley. While his exit is disappointing to his many fans, his continued involvement would have taken the focus away from the program. The series still appears to be a priority for the premium cable network, though, and it is in the very capable hands Goslett. The Nevers is set to debut on HBO this coming April, and it will also be able to be streamed on HBO Max.
