First Trailer: Sony’s “Dumb Money”

True-life business stories have become increasingly popular since the 2017’s The Founder starring Michael Keaton became a sleeper hit. Since then, there have been a number of high profile attempts to cash in, such as Amazon’s Air and Hulu’s Flaming Hot dropping earlier this year. The next tentpole in this genre is set to be Dumb Money, which details the story of a subReddit that is used to take down a big-time Wall Street hedge fund via GameStop stock.

The film stars the likes of Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Shailene Woodley, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson, Nick Offerman, Vincent D’Onofrio, Anthony Ramos, and Dane DeHaan and is based based on Ben Mezrich’s book of the same name.

The film looks equal parts humorous and angsty, with Paul Dano seemingly particularly well cast. Some films in this burgeoning genre, such as Apple’s Tetris, have crashed and burned as not every product needs an origin story, nor does every business deal need an epic retelling. However, there is enough intrigue surrounding this movie that it’ll likely end up better than some of its brethren.

Directed by Craig Gillespie (I Tonya), Dumb Money is set to open in theaters on September 22nd. Gillespie, Aaron Ryder and Teddy Schwarzman produce the project which is still in post-production at present.
