Teaser: “Pacific Rim: The Black” From Legendary And Netflix
Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 kaiju epic, Pacific Rim, remains one of the auteur director’s most successful efforts, and the film has become something of a cult classic, with fans loving the earnest tone mixed with non-stop monster versus robot action. While a sequel starring John Boyega came to fruition in 2018, it’s considered a flop, failing both commercially and critically.
The general consensus is that the sequel lacked the heart and authenticity of the original. Fingers eagerly got pointed at the studios for pushing del Toro out of the creative process, which greatly hampered the prospects of the follow-up, as the first film was very much a labor of love from the director that few thought would succeed.
However, that isn’t stopping Legendary Entertainment from continuing to try and turn Pacfic Rim into a franchise. This time, the studio has partnered with Netflix for an animated series titled Pacific Rim: The Black, and they have just released a teaser trailer for the upcoming project
The show will take place in a distant future, far removed from the movies, where humanity defeating the kaiju is nothing but a history lesson. However, the creatures aren’t as beaten as they seem, as they return and capture the entire continent of Australia which is then evacuated and left to the beasts. But a scrappy pair of siblings refuse to give up and take the fight to the kaiju with a battered, jaegar remnant they find and rebuild. They’ll have to battle across the vast Australia in search of their parents, and hopefully not die in the process.
Craig Kyle (Thor: Ragnarok) and Greg Johnson (X-Men: Evolution) serve as showrunners the project, which could lead to more films or shows if it proves successful. Pacific Rim: The Black drops on the streamer on March 4th.
