Final Trailer: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”

The Super Mario Bros. Movie build has been a bit of a mixed bag, particularly because the internet lost its collective mind over Chris Pratt voicing the titular character. Even so, the Mario train has kept chugging on, with Universal Pictures and Illumination’s recently dropping the final trailer for the video game adaptation.

Notably, this film marks the first adaptation of the franchise, and a Nintendo property, since 1993’s infamous live-action take on the same title that starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. While that film has garnered something of a cult following and the decades since its release, even those who find some enjoyment in it recognize that it essentially a flaming bag of dog feces. That said, the new trailer goes more into the story of the movie, with Donkey Kong’s overall role in the story getting highlighted, as well as more of a spotlight on side characters like Luigi and the big bad, Bowser.

Aside from Pratt as Mario (who, if the trailers are any indication, is going to do a fine job. Relax, internet), the voice cast for the film includes Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. And as a fun addition, Mario’s traditional voice actor, Charles Martinet, will also be involved in the film in some capacity.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to open  on April 5th and is expected to be a major earner over Easter weekend.
