First Trailer: Eddie Murphy Returns In “Coming 2 America”
Nostalgic sequels are becoming more and more frequent. Sometimes they are a quality product, like the critically acclaimed Blade Runner 2049. Other times, they are disappointing, like the cringeworthy Dumb and Dumber To, and make audiences wonder why the franchise was revisited. One thing is for certain, these sentimental sequels are going to keep coming and the next one out the gate will be Coming 2 America from Amazon, who just released a trailer for the project.
The film sees the return of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem, who’s set to become the next King of Zamunda. Before he can accept the throne, though, he learns that he has a son in America, and he must find the young man before his coronation. Arsenio Hall returns as well, as Akeem’s friend and personal aide, Semmi. Both actors will be playing multiple roles, as they did in the first outing.
The film is being helmed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) with a script from Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield. Much of the original cast returns as well, such as James Earl Jones and Louie Anderson. They will be joined newcomers Wesley Snipes, who looks to be the antagonist of the piece, Leslie Jones, and Jermaine Fowler.
The movie was produced by Paramount with a Christmas 2020 debut originally slated for the project. However, mass cinema closures due to the ongoing pandemic forced the studio to rethink it’s plans and sell off the distribution rights to Amazon.
Whether Coming 2 America will mark another victory for nostalgic sequels remains to be seen, but the trailer showcases a film that is trying to stay close to the original and seems both humorous and heartfelt. The movie will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on March 5th, 2021. Are you excited to see Eddie Murphy return as Prince Akeem?
