Apple Debuts Trailer For “Palmer” Starring Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake is one of the most eclectic entertainers in Hollywood today. While he is mainly known for his musical output, being one of the most successful popstars of the last twenty years, he’s also had a rather fruitful, if sporadic, acting career. In fact, Apple TV+ just released the trailer for his next project, Palmer.

In the film, Timberlake Eddie Palmer, a high school football star who fell on hard times and got sent to prison, serving 12 years. Upon his release, he returns to his hometown in Louisiana to live with his grandmother, played by June Squibb (Good Girls, Devious Maids). Once home, Palmer will form an unlikely friendship with a young boy who was abandoned by his parents.

The movie was initially announced in September of 2019 and marks Timberlake’s first film appearance, outside of lending his voice to Branch in Trolls: World Tour, since 2017’s Woody Allen piece, Wonder Wheel. Apple would pick up the work in July of this year, though there was no word about when it would release.

Timberlake is, perhaps, most well-known for his roles in comedies such as the well-received Friends with Benefits, the lambasted CGI-hybrid Yogi Bear, and as half of the moronic crooning duo from a series of Saturday Night Live digital shorts alongside frequent collaborator Andy Samberg. However, he has been in his fair share of dramas, with his role as Sean Parker in The Social Network earning him much acclaim.

Whether this film will be another success for Justin Timberlake remains to be seen, but, if the trailer is any true indication, Palmer will be both a thoughtful and nuanced portrayal of a man trying to get back on his feet. The film will be released on Apple TV+ on January 29, 2021.
