Anthony Mackie Is An Android In Netflix’s “Outside The Wire”

Outside the Wire is the next project from MCU star Anthony Mackie and Netflix just debuted a trailer for the film. The movie also stars Damon Idris (Black Mirror) and will be directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408). The feature is set in a dystopian future while a drone pilot (Idris) must work with an android (Mackie) to foil a terrorist plot and find a wayward doomsday device

While this production certainly appears promising, Mackie and the streaming studio have had a somewhat rocky relationship thus far. Their first collaboration was 2019’s ill-fated IO, which was released to scathing reviews. It was hoped that film could turn in to a sci-fi blockbuster smash, but it was largely ignored by fans and quickly forgotten.

Mackie then became the lead in the series Altered Carbon for the streamer, taking over from the departing Joel Kinnaman for the second season. The show was lambasted upon arrival, and viewership sharply declined, while a potential third season was consequently canceled.

Even with these two misfires under their belts, Mackie and Netflix are hoping this third effort will yield better results. After all, Anthony Mackie is riding high from anticipation for his reprisal of Marvel character, The Falcon, in an upcoming Disney+ series, where many think the acclaimed actor will officially take on the moniker of Captain America.

And this marks yet another blockbuster offering from Netflix, who have yet to create a successful sci-fi film franchise. There is no telling whether this will prove to be the film that breaks the string of bad luck or not that the pair have had thus far, but the trailer provides a glimpse at some exciting action and the story, while treading familiar ground, feels somewhat unique. Outside the Wire will debut on the streaming service on January 15th, 2020.
