First Trailer: “Godzilla vs. Kong”
Godzilla vs. Kong is one of the most anticipated films coming out in 2021. It has been repeatedly delayed, though, first because of a need to re-tool it in the wake of the financial disappointment of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and later because of the COVID pandemic. However, when Warner Bros. announced that all of their movies releasing in 2021 would drop simultaneously on HBO Max, they also confirmed that the kaiju extravaganza wouldn’t be pushed again.
Since that news hit, excitement has only grown, and Warners has capitalized by finally putting a trailer for the film out, and it actually answers a lot of questions regarding the project. Firstly, it shows us that Kong is being taken by the humans to protect them from Godzilla, who appears as something of a villain, even attacking a U.S. naval carrier. Many were assuming that Kong would seek to challenge for the title of King of the Monsters, but it seems the primate lord is far more benevolent than that.
The trailer goes on to highlight Kong’s unique relationship with mankind, focusing on a young girl with whom the great gorilla formed a special bond. It appears that Kong is especially protective of her, and the humans are hoping that the relationship forged between them can be turned to all of mankind.
For Godzilla’s part, it looks like he’s gone a little mad with power, as the lizard king is shown controlling other titans and predatorily roaming a metropolitan street. However, much of the supporting crew from King of the Monsters has also returned and it looks like they haven’t given up on their erstwhile savior.
Most significantly, the trailer hints that this isn’t the first confrontation between Kong and Godzilla, with the narration pointing out that Kong is the only won that can save earth because he’s the only one that “won’t back down.”
It’s great to get a look at Godzilla vs. Kong after such a long delay, but this trailer more than lives up to the hype. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza Gonzalez, Jessica Henwick, Julian Dennison, Kyle Chandler, and Demian Bichir, and will release both in theatres and on HBO Max on March 26th.
