“The United States Of America Vs. Vince McMahon” Finds Showrunners

Last year it was announced that Blumhouse TV was developing a series that would focus on WWE CEO Vince McMahon. That show has become The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon and Emmy-nominated “Transparent” writers Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster have recently signed on to be the showrunners for the project.

The limited series will explore the world of WWE (then called the WWF or the World Wrestling Federation) during the 1990s and the many interesting characters that populated it. The story will focus on the time in the middle of the decade when McMahon was repeatedly censured by the infamous New York Post writer, Phil Mushnick.

The repeated investigations led directly to the WWE and Vince McMahon being indicted by the U.S. government for allegedly supplying anabolic steroids to WWE talent. The trial famously saw Hulk Hogan testify before the open jury, McMahon refusing to take a plea and showing up to court in a neck brace, amongst other outlandish events.

What’s interesting is this all happened during the WWE’s (then the WWF) lowest point, as their television ratings were down and they well losing talent to rival promotion, WCW, which was backed by Ted Turner and led by Eric Bischoff. WCW would go onto actual beat WWE in the ratings for 83-weeks straight, almost putting the wrestling behemoth out of business.

However, the court case would end up falling in favor of McMahon, with the wrestling mogul being unanimously acquitted by the jury, and he would end up besting rival company, WCW and ultimately lead WWE to becoming one of the most successful entertainment entities in the world.

McMahon himself, alongside Kevin Dunn, Jason Blum, Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold will executive produce the limited series, though there is no plans for what platform or network will be broadcasting the project (though NBC or Peacock seems most likely), nor is their a timeline on when The United States of America Vs. Vince McMahon could debut, though the smart money is on it hitting in the spring of 2023, in the lead up to WWE’s WrestleMania.
