The CW Order “Supernatural” Spin-off “The Winchesters”

The main cast from The CW's "Supernatural"

Supernatural is one of the longest running genre shows in the history of broadcast television, with the series becoming a cult favorite and amassing a rabid fanbase. And while the Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki production might have called it quits after 15 seasons, the CW is moving ahead with a new prequel project, title The Winchesters.

While the production was rumored last summer, there was no official pilot order from the CW until now. According to Deadline:

The drama is centered on Dean and Sam Winchester’s parents – John and Mary – and tells the epic love story of how they met and how they put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world. It will be told through the perspective of narrator Dean Ackles’ Dean Winchester.

This is actually the third time that the CW has tried to create a spin-off from Supernatural. The first try was back in 2014 and was set to be titled Bloodlines, with a back door pilot being a part of the ninth season. That offering was going to b e set in Chicago and follow warring groups of monsters that were ruling the city. However, the episode was a disaster and considered one of the worst the show produced in 15 seasons.

Wayward Sisters, which would have followed Sherriff Jody Mills and her young daughters fighting the forces of darkness, was the second attempt at a spin-off from 2017. It was far more well-received by fans as it featured established characters from the show, but even that wasn’t enough to convince the network to take it to series.

The Winchesters, seems like a different kind of animal, as it ties more directly into the established canon that so captivated fans for more than a decade. Former Supernatural co-EP Robbie Thompson will write and executive produce alongside, Jensen Ackles, and his wife Danneel Ackles, herself a former recurring star of Supernatural, through Chaos Machine Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Should the pilot be a success, it’s likely that the show would be featured as a part of the Fall 2022 line-up.
