Showrunner Talks “Legends Of Tomorrow” Cancellation

The cast of The CW's DC series, "LEgends of Tomorrow"

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow was one of the most unique network offerings of the modern era of television. While the first season didn’t live up to the promise of the idea of the series, the creators essentially reset everything and the show turned things around, becoming a critical darling and something of a cult hit amongst DC fans, who often pointed to it being the best Arrowverse show, with its quality surpassing the more mainstream hits The Flash and Supergirl.

Legends blended traditional science fiction and fantasy themes with grounded stories that generally focused more on character. While the characters were Voltron-ing into a giant blue stuffed animal named Beebo to battle a malevolent demon or traveling throughout time to find misplaced historical figures and return them to their proper time, they were also dealing with personal and everyday issues, like building relationships or losing loved ones. It was an intensely personal show that never shied away from the hard truths of life.

However, the CW, which has been pruning the Arrowverse since the progenitor series, Arrow, called it quits in 2020 and Legends of Tomorrow has been canceled after seven weird and glorious seasons. Following on from the announcement, co-showrunner and executive producer Keto Shimizu took to Twitter to address the news:

Well, folks. It’s been an incredible run. However, the CW has let us know that there will be no season 8 of #LegendsOfTomorrow. We are heartbroken, but also immensely grateful for the amazing work our cast, crew, and writers have contributed to the little show that could. Thank you to our fans; your love and passion for our strange band of misfits has made every break, every script, every daily, every cut, and every mix worth all the hard work. We see you, we love you, and you’ll always have a place on the Waverider.

Legends was developed by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg and starred the likes of Brandon Routh, Caity Lotz, Jes Macallan, Wentworth Miller, Courtney Ford, Victor Garber, and Dominic Purcell, amongst a bevy of others. Notably, the series saw the return of Matt Ryan as the character of John Constantine after his NBC series was canceled after a single season, much to the delight of comic fans, who loved his interpretation.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow might be done, but the Arrowverse is still going, with Superman & Lois returning in the fall alongside The Flash, in what will likely be the final outing for the Scarlet Speedster. There is also the in-development Justice U, which will see the return of David Ramsey’s John Diggle.
