New “Wakanda” Series Announced By Marvel and Disney

Marvel Studios has been in a mood to drop a lot of tidbits about future projects lately. From the announcement that Ethan Hawke would be taking on the role of the antagonist in the Moon Night series, to the news that Ginger Gonzaga snagged a recurring role in She-Hulk, there has much to keep fan interested in the MCU. However, the comic book mega house just dropped one of their biggest announcements, that the Black Panther franchise would be getting a Disney+ follow-up in the form of the show Wakanda, which sees director Ryan Coogler returning to the fold and will likely explain the absence of T’Challa, since the unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman.

The show is actually a part of a deal that Disney made with Coogler and his company, Proximity Media, that will see the company develop shows and other properties for The Walt Disney Company as a whole. So, while Wakanda is the first official production to come out of the partnership, there is the possibility that Coogler and Proximity could have their hands in other franchises, like Star Wars, or the Disney live-action reboots.

Speaking with Variety, top Disney executive discussed the deal and how excited the Mouse House is to be partnering with Coogler:

Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation. With Black Panther Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful, and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team.

It’s good to see that Disney is so invested in a talent like Coogler, whose passion and vision were the driving forces behind the success of Black Panther. It will be interesting to see how the legacy of Black Panther is handled, especially since there has been very little word on what the future for that franchise holds, beyond a frim comment from Kevin Feige that the role would not be recast.

There were no story details provided for Wakanda, nor was a timeline for the production established, so it’s likely that this one is a long ways away. But the MCU is still rolling, with WandaVision currently airing new episodes every Friday.
