Netflix’s “Locke & Key” To End With Season 3

A skull-headed brass key from Netflix's "Locke & Key".

When Disney+ became a reality and Netflix subsequently canceled all of its MCU shows, many wondered how the streamer would conter the loss of all their Marvel content. In short order, though, Netflix proved they could find success without the comic powerhouse, debuting The Umbrella Academy and Locke & Key, to great audience reaction and critical acclaim. And now, the latter of those shows will be coming to an end with its forthcoming third season.

Locke & Key is based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s IDW comic series and has turned into something of a cult hit for Netflix. The show, which is half supernatural horror and half teenage rom-com, was adapted for the screen by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Meredith Averill. The decision to have season 3 conclude the series was reportedly a mutual one, with both Netflix and the showrunners agreeing that it was time.

In fact, Cuse and Averill note that the plan was always for the show to have a three-season arc, with a pair releasing a joint statement:

Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion. As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use.

The series follows the three Locke children who, grieving from the sudden murder of their father, move from the west coast to his family’s ancestral home in Massachusetts. However, upon their arrival, the children learn that the house is home to magical keys, which do a variety of fantastical thing, that the Locke family has been historically responsible for. And while this is exciting, at first, they quickly find themselves in the crosshairs of a demonic entity that wants the keys and will do whatever it has to do to get them.

Darby Stanchfield, Connor Jessup, Emilia Jones, Aaron Ashmore, Jackson Robert Scott, Petrice Jones, Laysla De Oliveira, Griffin Gluck, Hallea Jones and Brendan Hines star in Locke & Key with all principal cast members returning for the final outing. The season has already completed production and is expected to air later this year, likely hitting around Halloween.
