“Moon Knight” Director And EP Talks Series Future
Marvel Studios has taken a unique approach to their Disney+ shows, with each installment being rather self-contained and functioning more as a set of one-off limited series than ongoing shows. Loki is the lone exception to this, with that production quickly getting renewed for a sophomore installment after the season 1 finale aired. With the rather ominous ending to the recently finished Moon Knight, many are wondering just when the story of Steven Grant/Marc Specter and Khonshu is going to continue.
After all, just because a show is “one-and-done” doesn’t mean the character is finished. After all, WandaVision did a lot of the heavy lifting to set up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier paved the way for a new Captain America film. Given this level of interconnectivity, it seems likely that the character of Moon Knight will be popping up sooner than later.
Even so, there’s no definitive idea as to when. During interviews promoting the show, Oscar Isaac made it clear that there were no plans for a follow up and that there wasn’t even any “serious interest” in doing one. However, Marvel has been more coy regarding the situation, touting the last episode as the “season 1 finale” rather than the “series finale”, and leading many to believe that a second season is in the works.
In fact, the Moon Knight season finale director and series EP Mohamed Diab recently spoke with Deadline about the possibility of a renewal for the show, and commented that:
We don’t know if there’s a next season. Marvel doesn’t go with a conventional way, so even if they like the character and want to extend the world, it could be season 2, it could be a standalone film, or he can join another superhero’s journey. I’m kept in the dark, just like the fans. We never discussed it being a season 2, but one day there’s going to be an expansion, but I don’t know how it’s going to look like.
Whatever the case, the season finale makes it clear that Moon Knight is far from finished in the MCU, as the third, more antagonistic personality, Jake Lockley, appeared in the post-credits scene. But for now, fans can only wonder at what’s next for the avatar of the Moon God. The full first season of Moon Knight is currently available on Disney+ now.
