Michelle Yeoh Opens Up About Her “Star Trek” Future

Star Trek: Discovery is in the midst of its third season which is being hailed as its best thus far. The first season was met with middling reviews, though the second was a marked improvement, as was the debuting Picard series, and the latest installment seems to be continuing with that trend.

Many point to the change in setting, with the crew of the USS Discovery traveling through time to the 32nd century, as the main reason for the uptick in quality. The show is no longer shackled by the lore of what came before and after it in the chronology of the franchise. It has been able to forge its own path, so to speak, and audiences have noted that the show seems fresh as a result.

Of note, viewers and critics have pointed to Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Georgiou as a standout for the current set of episodes. While she has been part of the project since the beginning, her character has really had the chance to shine. Georgiou has always been a fan-favorite, but the chance to explore her motivations throughout season 3 has developed her into a much more sympathetic and nuanced character.

Following on from the events of the latest episode,“Terra Firma, Part 2” (SPOILERS AHEAD) wherein Georgiou sacrifices herself to save the Discovery crew, actress Michelle Yeoh has opened up about the titular emperor’s fate. Speaking with Wil Wheaton on the podcast The Ready Room, Yeoh stated that:

It’s never going to be goodbye. Not if I have a hand in that… but at that moment it was really tough. Knowing that I will not be seeing my new family for a while… In my thirty years as an actor, Georgiou has been so fulfilling as an actor that it’s been awesome. And so for that reason alone, I’m never going away!

It’s unclear if Georgiou actually perished as a result of her uncharacteristic heroics and it’s likely that it was done as a way to force her to irrevocably make an exodus from Star Trek: Discovery. Yeoh herself notes as much during the interview, commenting that, “It came to a point where it was necessary if we were going to go on more journeys with Emperor Georgiou that some things have to happen.”

Her send off from Star Trek: Discovery was certainly grand and befitting of the character’s arc throughout the series. Could this be the jumping off point for the proposed Section 31 show, or something else entirely? Only time will tell. Discovery is currently streaming on CBS All Access, airing on Thursdays.
