Marvel Brings “Daredevil” Duo Back For “Echo” Series
While Marvel Studios has most certainly assembled an eclectic collection of Disney+ series over the last two years, one of the most intriguing, and out of left field, has been Echo. The character first appeared in Hawkeye as a pseudo-antagonist that quickly became an important supporting hero in the show. Marvel was quick to announce a follow-up series for the superhero, but little was known about what fans could expect, other than it would pick up with Maya after the events of Hawkeye, with her prior gang life coming back to haunt her as she tried to reconnect with her Native American roots.
But that’s no longer the case, as it was recently announced that Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio would be reprising their roles of Daredevil/Matt Murdock and Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk, respectively. This is notable because the character of Echo originated in the comics as a Daredevil supporting character, so it makes sense to include as much of that mythos as possible.
And this was already done in Hawkeye, where D’Onofrio appeared as the big bad of the series and the link between the villain and Echo were established, with it being clear that Fisk acted as something of a surrogate father to Echo, much like he did in the comics. The end of that series left Kingpin’s fate up in the air, as he was seemingly killed by Echo, but most realized that as no body was ever seen that Marvel’s Kingpin of Crime somehow survived.
Cox, meanwhile, returned to the role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, showing up as the lawyer for Peter Parker and playfully hinting at his heroic alterego. Reportedly, Echo will include a plotline in which Daredevil is searching out a former ally with podcast, titled “The Weekly Planet”. It’s being said that that particularly is Jessica Jones whom Krysten Ritter played in her own Netflix series, but that is far from confirmed.
This could lead to further confirmation of the Netflix shows officially being considered canon in the MCU and lead to Ritter’s Jessica Jones finding her way back into the Marvel-fold. Echo is set to start filming later this fall, with it expected to hit Disney+ sometime next year, most likely late spring or early summer.
