James Gunn Talks “Peacemaker” And Possible Season 2

When DC’s Peacemaker was first announced, there was a fair amount of trepidation surrounding the project. Many were unsure of how a show based on a D-list character would fair, and there were a lot of questions surrounding the chronology of the project, namely, whether it would be a sequel or prequel to The Suicide Squad.

However, given that villain team-up sequel was a critical darling, with John Cena’s Peacemaker being hailed as a standout, a lot of those fears have been assuaged and it has been confirmed that the show will indeed be a sequel, as the character ended up surviving his tenure in Task Force X.

Now, as the show’s HBO Max release gets closer, Gunn has opened up about the series, specifically noting that he was reluctant to add a post-credits scene. The director is referring to the fact that, in the original script for The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker did, in fact, perish, and that he isn’t a fan of characters returning from death, though he made an exception to that rule. During an interview with EW, Gunn stated:

I did exactly the thing I hate when other filmmakers do [it]. But I did it! I’ll have to live with the repercussions, which is the most incredible TV show people will ever see.

The post-credits scene sees a pair of A.R.G.U.S. agents on Amanda Waller’s bad side stuck with having to work with Peacemaker in order to “save the world”, as, apparently, the vigilante is the only person who can do the job needed. There are no other story details of late, but given the epic scale of The Suicide Squad, it’s likely things will get very real, very quickly.

And while no one is quite sure what to expect with the first season, which is due on in January of 2022¸ talk of a follow-up has already started, with Gunn positing that, “I would like to do a Season 2, they just have to tell me that they want to do it.”
