Favreau Talks “The Mandalorian” Future
While Star Wars fans might be caught up with the Obi-Wan Kenobi series right now, that doesn’t mean that Lucasfilm has forgotten about the first show they produced, The Mandalorian. Over two seasons, that series has become an indelible part of the Star Wars mythos, and, arguably, the most popular installment that has been produced in the Disney era thus far.
Work on a third season is underway and many are expecting the next season to be the most action-packed yet. In fact, series showrunner and frequent writer/director Jon Favreau spoke with Collider about the future the original Star Wars TV series, stating that:
I think Dave [Filoni] and I talked about this a lot. And it’s interesting how things evolve and change in small ways, but we all know where everything’s going to end because of when the time period ends. We know that the First Order is going to appear. So, there are things on the horizon that we know, but that’s 25 years in the future. Within that, we also know storylines that are going to unfold within the characters that we’re either inheriting or developing. So, I would say that there is a lot of preparation done in broad strokes with how do these storylines that we’ve established culminate, but we’re doing that within the confines and parameters of what’s pre-existing in canon.
It appears that The Madalorian is going to have some legs and break from the streaming precedent of 3-4 seasons that Netflix has been so fond of over the years, with most other streamers have adopted. And that’s certainly good news, as the show has garnered a rabid fanbase that is almost as invested in the adventures of Mando and the Child as they were in with the Skywalker Saga.
The new season of show will see the return of Pedro Pascal in the lead role, while the likes of WWE’s Sasha Banks, Giancarlo Esposito and Carl Weathers are returning, while Christopher Lloyd is joining for a guest appearance. Interestingly, Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kyrze is getting an upgrade to series regular, as it’s being rumored that she’ll be a focal point in the series, with her likely seeking a way to wrest the darksaber from Mando. The Mandalorian is still in post-production at the moment and it’s expected to hit Disney+ in February of 2023.
