Emma Stone To Star In “The Curse” For Showtime
It was just announced that acclaimed Actress Emma Stone will lead the cast of the upcoming Showtime series, The Curse. The project comes from Uncut Gems directors Josh and Benny Safdie, so it’s certain the show will have an irreverent twist of sorts.
The series marks Stone’s, who’s more well-known for her cinematic roles and was recently linked to be returning to the Spider-Man franchise alongside the likes of Charlie Cox and Tobey Maguire, first major small screen role since Netflix’s middling dark comedy, Maniac. Conversely, this is also the first television production for the Safdie Brothers. The siblings Uncut Gems was a critical darling late last year and led to prolific awards campaign for that film’s star, Adam Sandler. Said Award hopes even got parodied by Sandler and the Safdie’s when the actor got snubbed for an Oscar in the short, Goldman v Silverman.
The production will also feature Nathan Fielder, who’s also cited as a co-creator, in a role alongside Emma Stone. The action focuses on a purported curse that affects a new marriage when the couple try to conceive a child, while also starring as the faces of a popular HGTV program. And in a fun tidbit, director and producer Benny Safdie will appear onscreen as well, being featured as a producer of the titular pair’s television show.
There were no other specifics provided for the story, but it’s expected it will be a black comedy that blends different genres into it. With the supernatural element of a curse, this likely won’t be particularly difficult. It also marks an interesting choice for Showtime, which is in need of content, as its most successful show, Shameless, is coming to an end with its current 11th season.
There were also no other casting announcements, though further news will likely release soon. A24 has been tapped to produce the project for Showtime. There is no timeline set for The Curse, though it is possible it could have a late 2021 bow, though sometime in 2022 is far more likely.
