Disney’s Cassian Andor Star Wars Series Starts Production

Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises in entertainment history. While the recent films have been extremely divisive among fans, especially the mainline entries, The Mandalorian streaming series has been an unquestioned hit. With season 2 currently airing to both audience and critical acclaim, Disney is doubling down on its small screen aspirations.

Rogue One actor Diego Luna recently appeared on the late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss the upcoming Cassian Andor series for Disney+, establishing that work had already begun on the project and briefly discussing the plot. He stated that:

It’s basically everything you have to know to understand Rogue One. The story of the character before. I can spoil the ending, I guess. It’s nice to go into a story you already know the ending. Now you can take the nuances and the layers. I think it’s fun to do something that isn’t just about getting to the end. It’s about delaying that.

It’s nice to hear that the actor is so enthused to return to the Star Wars universe. Rogue One is almost universally praised, with many considering it to be the best of the Disney-era films. And given that his Cassian Andor character was so well-received initially, it will be interesting to learn a little about the character. The show is expected to have a fun, spy-thriller theme and feature more about how the resistance fought against the Empire.

With production confirmed to have already begun, it’s possible that the show could debut at some point in late 2021, though it could be pushed to early 2022. However, no concrete release has been provided as of yet. Luna will be joined by confirmed cast members Alan Tudyk, Stellan Skarsgard, and Genevieve O’Reilly, while Tonly Gilroy returns to Star Wars and the character of Cassian Andor as executive producer.
