CM Punk Talk About His Role In “Heels”

The new pro wrestling drama Heels from Starz is one of the more unique projects to come along recently. The show is Stephen Amell’s follow-up to his star making turn on the CW’s Arrow and represents quite a shift from what audiences have seen from him though. Some promotional materials were released last month that sparked a lot of chatter and got people excited.

But the hype train isn’t done rolling yet, and now one of Amell’s co-stars, former WWE champion CM Punk, who purportedly plays one of the main antagonists, has opened up about his role in the series. During an interview with Sports Illustrated, Punk specifically stated that:

We just wrapped on season one. I’m going to wait for the producers to release the name of my character, but I play a wrestler—and they gave me the parameters, then I was able to mold the character into my own. This is a guy that I’ve shared locker rooms with. I’m sure wrestling fans will watch this show and they’ll, at various points, be able to point at me and go, ‘He’s doing this guy now.’ It’s really my love letter to one person specifically, and I don’t want to mention who it is. I want people to enjoy it as it organically happens.

It’s interesting to hear that Punk was given so much leeway with his character. Given that he is considered one of the best professional wrestlers of the modern era, though, it makes a certain amount of sense, as he knows the business in and out and would have no problem establishing a credible wresting villain.

And wrestling fans will likely have a lot of time to speculate about which star Punk is emulating to create the character. Heels still doesn’t have a definite release date, though it is being earmarked for a prime summer debut on Starz.
