Another “Game Of Thrones” Prequel In Development At HBO

While Game of Thrones concluded its run with a somewhat disappointing final season last year, HBO is bound and determined to get another show off the ground. They’ve got House of the Dragon, which will follow the early years of the Targaryen family, lined up for some time in 2022. However, according to Variety, the premium cable network is moving forward with a series revolving around the George R.R. Martin novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg.

The series of mini-novels revolves around Ser Duncan the Tall, a struggling knight of low birth trying to make a name for himself and live an honorable life in Westeros, and his squire, Egg, who just so happens to be Aegon V Targaryen, and is known to audiences as the Maester of Castle Black, who appeared in the early seasons of Game of Thrones. There are three novellas is totals, all of which were combined into a collection and reprinted as the book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

The series would be set 90 years before the events of the original show, and who heavily focus on the foundation for what transpired in the series. It is likely that the downfall of House Targaryen would play a big role in the series, though how the novellas will be adapted isn’t yet known.

This is certainly an interesting source material for HBO to mine for a potential series. Ser Duncan is much more stern and honorable and would be a lead character similar to Sean Bean’s doomed Ned Stark. Moreover, it will allow for some broader context about the realm of Westeros to be elaborated on, and for some of the mysteries of Game of Thrones to be answered more fully. There is no talent attached to the series, but it appears that the proposed show is a priority for HBO, so it will likely be fast tracked.
