“Andor” Showrunner Talks “Star Wars” Canon Surprises
One of the most surprising shows that Lucasfilm announced for the Disney+ streaming service was Andor, which will focus on the character of Cassian Andor, as played by Diego Luna. It’s a little perplexing because the character only featured in the one-off Rogue One, and subsequently perished in that film. There just didn’t seem to be much of a reason for a prequel on for such a minot character. Even so, it’s become one of the most anticipated shows for Disney and fans are eagerly awaiting details on the show.
And to this point, series showrunner Tony Gilroy recently commented during an interview with Vanity Fair tthat the project will “shake-up” the Star Wars canon and that there will be several notable surprises. Gilroy specifically stated that:
There are certain events that happen in these five years that are important and need to be paid attention to. There are certain people, characters that are legacy characters, that the audience, the passionate audience, really feels that they have an understanding of and know. In some cases, they’re right. And in some cases, what we’re saying is, ‘What you know, what you’ve been told, what’s on Wookieepedia, what you’ve been telling each other … is really all wrong.’ It’s upside down, or it’s sideways, or it’s the opposite of what you thought was true. Or it’s way more interesting than you had ever thought. Or that’s a lie and there’s a reason for it. I would say that there’s some surprises in store.
It’s good to hear that the creative team for Andor isn’t afraid to take risks, but it’s anyone’s guess how the notoriously prickly Star Wars fans will react (just look at the polarizing responses to Episode 8 & 9, which were blasted for taking things too far and playing it too safe, respectively). But audiences have largely been more kind to the shows thus far, so fingers crossed Disney and Lucasfilm have another hit.
Andor will be set five years before the events of Rogue One and will follow the titular character as he joins the Rebellion and rises through the ranks. The series will play out similar to shows like Arrow and Lost, with flashbacks to his childhood on a planet that opposed the rule of the Empire. Notably, Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma will reportedly play a key role in the series.
Andor will have a first season comprised of 12-episodes, more than any other Star Wars series to date, with the first trailer expected to premiere at this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration convention in California. The series has already been renewed for a second season, with the first expected to drop later this summer, though no firm date has yet been provided.
