Writers Reese And Wernick Talk “Deadpool 3” Tone
While the merger between FOX and Disney several years ago was generally considered to be a good thing by both fans and critics, there were many that were worried that some of FOX’s more adult-themed properties would get watered down to better fit in with the Mouse House’s more family-friendly aesthetic. And the film people seemed to worry about more than any other was Deadpool 3.
First releasing in 2016, the original Deadpool was a halmark for the genre, smartly sending up several tropes of comic book films while simultaneously revinventing them. It, along with its 2018 sequel, proved that comic book adaptations could be successful even when geared to a more adult audience. The irreverent humor combined with the off the charts charisma of series lead Ryan Reynolds was a winning combination.
However, since the aforementioned merger, there hasn’t been much movement on the threequel, though Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has stated on many an occasion that Deadpool 3 was a priority and would be making its way forward sooner than later. Even so, many remained concerned the film would be inevitably toned down to a PG-13 rating, with many pointing to the Once Upon A Deadpool Christmas re-edit of the second film as proof that the character could fit such a mold successfully.
However, Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick recently sat down with THR to promote their upcoming Netflix feature Spiderhead, starring Chris Hemsworth, and were asked about the future of the Merc with a Mouth’s movies. with Wernick commenting that, “Deadpool is gonna be Deadpool.” Reese further confirmed that Disney had no plans to change the tone of the Deadpool threequel, stating:
They’ve been very supportive with regard to that. Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.
There is still no release date or even a production announcement for Deadpool 3. It’s been repeatedly said that the film is in development, but it is still likely 2-3 years off from existing in the MCU.
