Warners Reveals New “Aquaman 2” Cast And Teases Villain
Warner Bros. and DC’s 2018 superhero feature, Aquaman, was something of an unknown quantity upon its release, especially given that the character was a long-running joke, but all doubts proved to be for naught as it was a huge hit, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide at the box office.
As such, it was no surprise that a sequel with the subtitle The Lost Kingdom was quickly greenlit. That film is well over a year away at this point, but Warners just announced some new cast additions, and along with them some brief story details.
Specifically, Vincent Regan (300), Jani Zhao (Sul), and Indya Moore (Pose) are all set to join the production, which sees most of the major players from the original returning, including Jason Momoa half-Atlantean king/hero, Patrick Wilson as his villainous brother Orm/Ocean Master, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Randall Park as the skeptical marine biologist Dr. Stephen Shin, and Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus.
Zhao will be playing a mystery character named Stingray, while Moore is taking on the role of longtime DC character Karshon, otherwise known as the villain Shark, and Regan is Atlantis’ ancient ruler Atlan who caused the city to sink into the sea.
The interesting reveal here is Regan’s Atlan, who is a major figure in the Aquaman mythos whose history could point at the direction of the plot. In the comics, the history of the destruction of Atlantis is brought to light and Atlan is resurrected in an attempted revolt against the rule of Arthur Curry. The former monarch is christened the Dead King and wages a fierce war for control of Atlantis.
Given the subtitle of the film, it’s likely the history of the underwater kingdom will play a big role, with Atlan’s Dead King initially appearing as a savior of sorts, but quickly morphing into a villain, similar to the role that Kurt Russell’s Ego had in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is currently in production in Hawaii ahead of a December 16th, 2022 release.
