Warner Bros. Sets Production For “Godzilla Vs. Kong” Sequel
Legendary and Warner’s Monsterverse has been something of a mixed bag, with critics being soft on several entries and the direct sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which greatly expanded the scope of the franchise, proving to be something of a flop. However, last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong was a hit on HBO Max at the height of COVID restrictions, and, as such, the expected follow-up has finally been officially announced.
Godzilla vs. Kong had a very respectable 468 million gross at the worldwide box office, and while critics were quick to poke at some of the story’s inconsistencies, audiences were more than happy to sit back for 2 hours and watch two iconic kaijus battle it out. The biggest boon was that the film didn’t take itself too seriously, which was something of a concern, especially considering the first two Godzilla films. However, a small shift in tone and more of a focus on the monsters led to fans embracing the new iterations.
Warner Bros. will kick off shooting later this year in Queensland, Australia, and will reportedly bring over 60 million into the Australian economy. There weren’t any other announcements, such as returning cast or a director, and given the large amount of CGI required for the project, 2024 seems to be the earliest that the production could find its way into theaters.
