Tracy Morgan Signs On For The Long Awaited “Twins” Sequel
A sequel to Universal‘s cult 80’s comedy Twins has been in some form of development for decades, but the project was never really able to gather steam, until now, with Deadline reporting that Tracy Morgan has signed on for the follow-up, Triplets.
The original saw Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger play a pair of mismatched twin siblings that had been separated for their whole lives, with each only learning about the existence of the other when they were well into adulthood. The story followed the pair as they entwined their lives and figured out what it meant to be brothers.
Originally, the idea was for Eddie Murphy to take on the role of the wayward triplet, and the the actor seemed keen to take on the role, often commenting on the possibility. However, scheduling conflicts have disallowed that possibility, so the production has pivoted to Morgan, with the entire script getting a fresh rewrite to be more in line with the style of the comedian.
The first film’s director, Ivan Reitman, has settled on terms to return to helm the project, while Lucas Kavner and Dylan Dawson have been tapped to do the rewrite. There are no production dates lined up, nor any potential release periods been discussed, as no studio has officially picked up the movie.
Even so, things are moving forward, and it’s expected that a sizzle reel will be coming out in the near future to pitch the project. If things progress quickly, it’s not out of the realm of chance for Triplets to hit sometime in late 2022, but an early 2023 debut is more likely.
