Sony Shuffles “Spider-Verse” Sequels; Dates “Madame Web”
Following the lukewarm reception to their recently released Morbius, Sony Pictures has shuffled around the theatrical release calendar for several of its Spider-Man projects currently in development
The most notable change is for the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a sequel to 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is considered by many to be the best comic book adaptation of the modern era. Across is first installment of a two-part film and was originally set to release on October 7th of this year. However, it has been pushed back eight months to June 2nd, 2023.
On the live action front, the recently announced Madame Web, which will focus on the origins of the mystical character that often ties heavily into Marvel’s multiverse, has officially be set for a July 7th, 2023 release. Many are expecting that this film will provide some direct links to the MCU and be the bridge for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man to transition out of the MCU, though nothing is confirmed as of yet. In the comics, Madame Web is often a mentor for Peter Parker, helping him to understand the nature of his powers and exposing him to the mythos of the Spider-verse. Given this nature, it makes sense that the film could lead to Tom Holland jumping into the Sony-verse.
Importantly, this announcement means that Madame Web will be coming out about 6 months after Kraven the Hunter, which will debut in January of 2023 and is the only currently announced Spider-Man project to keep its scheduled release.
