Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is teaming up with Anthony and Joe Russo for Universal Pictures’ The Electric State, an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name from of Simon Stålenhag’s, a globally acclaimed author and the artist behind Things from the Flood and Tales from the Loop.
In the film, Brown will feature as a young runaway in a distant future who befriends a strange robot that has been sent to her by her missing brother. With the help of the robot and a stolen car, they set out to find her wayward sibling and will reveal a disturbing conspiracy along the way.
The Electric State was named one of the best books of 2018 by NPR and many have been eagerly awaiting a cinematic version of the property. In fact, the Russo Brothers gave a statement to Deadline regarding this new project:
We’re thrilled to have this deal with Universal who has committed to a theatrical release of ‘Electric State’. “This is incredible news for us as filmmakers, and for audiences around the world who want an opportunity to experience films in theatres again. This is also a positive sign that, as vaccines become available, the theatrical market is returning.
The Russo’s acquired the movie right back in 2017 and will produce the movie through their AGBO banner alongside Mike Larocca. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Avengers: Endgame), who also penned the script for the Russos’ next movie, The Gray Man starring Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, have been tapped as the writers for the project. Millie Bobby Brown, meanwhile, is currently shooting the fourth season of the hit series Stranger Things. She will also be seen in Warner Bros’ sequel Godzilla vs. Kong, which will be releases in May of 2021 both in theaters and on HBO Max.
Considering the success the Russo Brothers have had producing big sci-fi projects, The Electric State seems like it will be right up their alley. There is currently no timetable for production, but it’s likely, given Brown’s small screen commitments, that the movie won’t film until late 2021, ahead of a 2022 release.
