Metal Gear Solid Film Casts Oscar Isaac As Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid is one of the few video games that most can agree deserves a film adaptation. In fact, fans have been clamoring for such a movie for almost as long as the franchise has been around. This wish is now closer to reality that ever, as Sony just announced that Oscar Isaac has been cast in the titular role of Solid Snake.
The series, first launched in 1998 on the original PlayStation, was created by Hideo Kojima (“Death Stranding”) and published by Konami. It featured Solid Snake as a soldier at the peak of his career seeking to stop the terrorist organization known as Foxhound.
At the time, the unique gameplay mixed with a top-tier story had gamers hooked. The franchise has gone on to produce multiple sequels and spin-offs that have been very successful, and even helped Kojima become one of the most renowned names in gaming. Metal Gear has also moved into other realms of media, such as a well-regarded comic series and a collection of novels.
A film adaptation has been in the works at several different point in recent memory. Most notably, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, after the success of Kong: Skull Island, was pursuing the project for a potential directing gig. That, however, appears to only have gone as far as initial talks. Up until this point, everything regarding a movie production based on the game series was pure speculation.
But with Avi Arad (the Spider-Man franchise) on board to produce, and an increasingly popular actor in the lead role, things are definitely moving in the right direction for a Metal Gear Solid film. No other information was provided, and it isn’t clear if there is a script already, or when production could begin. Isaac is actually quite busy, set for Marvel’s Moon Knight and HBO’s Scene from a Marriage. It’s likely that the earliest the film could move forward is the fourth quarter of 2021.
