Jared Leto And Darren Aronofsky Are “Adrift” Together
Eager DC fans might be hotly anticipating Jared Leto reprising his Suicide Squad role of The Joker in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but the actor is actually having something of a moment right now, with several productions recently being announced, such as the AppleTV+ series, WeCrashed, which Leto will be headlining. However, his most exciting project was just announced, and he’ll be starring in Adrift, which sees him reteaming with Darren Aronofsky.
The film is based on a short story by Koji Suzuki, who scripted the iconic horror film, The Ring. The plot follows the crew of a fishing expedition on the open sea that unexpectedly comes across an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. One of the more inexperienced deckhands then takes sole control of the wayward vessel while it’s towed back to the shore, but he comes to find out that there is something nefarious, and perhaps even supernatural, happening on the boat, and why the rest of the crew members called it a “Ghost Ship.”
Deadline is reporting that Aronofsky will be writing the script with the help of Luke Dawson, while also taking on the direction duties. And Leto, for his part, will likely be playing the role of the young deckhand controlling the “Ghost Ship.” It’s being said that the actor has been chasing the rights to the short story for close to a decade, and it was only recently that he secured them.
This is a particularly interesting, as Leto and Aronofsky first collaborated on the cult classic Requiem for a Dream, the feature that arguably launched both of their careers. Nearly twenty years on from that picture, the two are in the primes of their respective careers and the eerie quality of the source material could mesh very well with the sensibilities each man brings to the table.
Jason Blum will produce through his Blumhouse Productions, while Leto and his partner, Emma Ludbrook, are attached through their Paradox production company. The actor can currently be seen in The Little Things on HBO Max and in theaters, while Aronofsky is set to start production on The Whale with Brenden Fraser in March. It’s likely that Adrift won’t start filming until late this year, or perhaps even early 2021.
