Director Talks What “The LEGO Batman 2” Would Have Been
The Lego movies have been something of a mixed bag, with the quality of each entry varying significantly. One thing that most can agree on, though, is that The LEGO Batman, while a little light at the box office, was one of the better entries, mixing the Caped Crusader’s mythos with a heartwarming story about family and self-acceptance.
As such, there was a big expectation that there would be a sequel, and there were indeed big plans for such a film. However, with Universal taking over the rights to the LEGO property, and Batman remaining with DC and the WB, the chances of that coming to fruition are slim to none.
However, while speaking with Collider, The LEGO Batman director Chris McKay dropped some of the story beats that the movie would have followed, stating that:
It was truly epic… both from an action standpoint and from a story standpoint. The structure was Godfather Part 2… a story about Batman’s relationship to the Justice League (and Superman) now as well as the formative moments of the Justice League (and Batman’s relationship with Superman) then. [But] The studio was leery of LEGO Batman being an actual Batman movie so I was constantly told to hold back. Audiences (and subsequent movies like ‘Into the Spider-Verse’) proved them wrong. I would have quadrupled down on making it as much of a real Justice League movie (with lots of jokes, cameos, intersecting storylines, references, etc… it would have been a VERY dense movie) as humanly possible.
McKay goes on to explain that the animated follow-up would have been “Boogie Nights-esque” with a shift in focus from family to accepting change, with the first draft of the project being written by Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon and Loki head writer Michael Waldron, which would have solidified a much more irreverent tone.
The director also confirmed that the villains of the piece would have been Lex Luthor and OMAC, which would have been interesting, especially since so much of Batman’s rogues’ gallery was used up in the first offering. And while this movie is unlikely to ever transpire now, it’s interesting to see how much the thought was being put into The LEGO Batman sequel.
