Chris Evans Reportedly Returning As Captain America
Avengers: Endgame was meant as a definitive ending for many of the ongoing plots in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as the final outing for several characters. Tony Stark/Iron Man heroically perished whilst saving the universe and defeating Thanos, proving once and for all that he did have what it takes to make the sacrifice play. The other major character to get an end to his story was Chris Evans’ Captain America. After returning the infinity stones back to their rightful places in time, the first avenger chose to remain in the in the past with his great love, Peggy Carter.
As such, a much older version of Steve Rogers appeared in the closing minutes of Endgame and hand off the shield to Sam Wilson/The Falcon, essentially naming him as his successor and setting up the events of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It was assumed that Rogers’ time in the MCU was at its end, and Evans seemed more than happy to be hanging up the shield, moving on to other projects and becoming the new voice of Buzz Lightyear.
However, it appears that time has softened that actor’s stance. According to Deadline, Chris Evans will be returning to the MCU as Captain America/Steve Rogers for more superhero action. How this will happen, narratively, isn’t yet known. It’s was noted, though, that he wouldn’t be headlining a new trilogy of films, and that his appearances will likely be supporting roles, much like how Robert Downey Jr. returned for Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
While this return still isn’t quite official, as neither Evans nor Marvel have confirmed it, it is exciting, nonetheless. Steve Rogers remains one of the most popular characters, and there are a lot of story possibilities remaining for the character. The future of Captain America is a little more solid now, and this seems like a great move for Marvel, helping them to anchor their cinematic offerings with an established presence while still pressing forward with new content, like the soon-to-release WandaVision.
