Andy Samberg To Headline New Sci-Fi Comedy For Apple+
Andy Samberg is having a moment right now, with last year’s Palm Springs, an update to the time loop formula that sees the Samberg reliving the same day over and over again, in a plot very similar to Bill Murray’s Groundhog’s Day, becoming something of an indie darling and garnering the former SNL funnyman some of the best notices of his career. Now, Samberg is looking to follow that success up and will be re-teaming with Andy Siara, who wrote Palm Springs, for a currently untitled sci-fi comedy.
There are not specifics regarding what kind of sci-fi film this will be or no story details have been provided. The project will be based on an original idea from BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and will see the Lonely Island frontman co-star with comedy great, Ben Stiller.
And, in perhaps the most exciting news about the production, Noah Hawley, creator of FX’s Fargo is joining in as a producer, with a possibility that he’ll take on the directing responsibilities, though that isn’t confirmed. Stiller will also be credited as a producer, alongside Bob-Waksberg, Dan Seligmann and Nicky Weinstock, while Siara will handle the script.
The movie is being set up with Apple+, so it’s likely that it’ll be a marquee release for the fledgling streamer, though whether it will be exclusive to the service, or if it will receive a theatrical release, or some combination of the two, isn’t currently known.
Even so, with such comedic pedigree involved, as well as a modern legend like Hawley on board, it’s clear that this project holds a lot of promise. And given that it’s being based on an idea from one of the creative minds behind Netflix’s Bojack Horseman, it’ll likely be equal parts weird and hilarious. Whatever the case, Andy Samberg could hit it big with this follow up to Palm Springs, his most well-received project to date.
