Peacock and John Cena Plan “WWE Evil” Docuseries
WWE is the longest running sports entertainment company, having existed in one form or another since the 1970’s. While pro wrestling’s heyday was arguably in the late 90’s, with The Rock and “Stonecold” Steve Austin leading the charge against for the WWF (as it was named then) against Goldberg and ‘Hollywood” Hulk Hogan in WCW, the business is still alive and thriving, and it was just announced through Variety that a new documentary series called WWE Evil is set to be produced.
The show is the first major title to come as a result of NBC’s Peacock absorbing the niche streamer, the WWE Network, earlier this year. The show is reportedly set to focus on the popular antagonists, such as Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Randy Orton, and Edge, that have helped make sports entertainment what it is. Former WWE superstar and 16-time World Champion turned box-office heavyweight, John Cena, is on board to both develop and narrate the series.
The focus on the project is said to be a “psychological exposé into the minds of the most diabolical characters in WWE history and their impact on mainstream culture.” This is certainly something for a goldmine area for Peacock, as many of WWE’s most colorful and well-regarded characters are heels (wrestling term for a bad guy), and many have said that being a good heel is one of the hardest things to do. Moreover, some of the best wrestlers of all-time, from the aforementioned Ric Flair to current stars such as Bray “The Fiend” Wyatt, are amongst the most entertaining and fans will appreciate the chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at how these characters came to pass.
How many episodes are set to be produced, or when this series could potentially go to air hasn’t been revealed, but it likely won’t be until sometime in 2022. If WWE Evil is successful it could lead to a lot more WWE-themed content, as the company has a vast back catalog of content to mine.
