CM Punk On If He’ll Ever Return To The Ring
For a brief period, CM Punk was one of the most prolific wrestlers in the world. He was, arguably, the face of the WWE for several years in the early 2010s and was responsible for some of the most iconic moments during that timeframe.
The famed grappler would unceremoniously quit the company a in January of 2014 amidst a swirl of frustration and rumor. Punk would go on to elaborate on the situation, citing that he was working hurt and never really given the due that he felt he deserved. When he was being pushed into a Wrestlemania feud with Triple H, instead of into a marquee feud for a world title, he felt enough was enough. The 2014 Royal Rumble would end up as Punk’s last match.
Ever since, fans of the WWE and pro wrestling have been wondering if CM Punk would ever make a return to the squared circle. While most write off the possibility, the question still comes up often. Punk addressed what it would take for him to come back, during an appearance the podcast Oral Sessions with Renee Paquette. Specifically, Punk said that:
I think the landscape currently is much different than when I left. You can play the game where if AEW was an option, would you have gone right after you left WWE? If you are going to play that game, there is no way they (WWE) would have handled it the way they handled it by suspending me for two months and nobody contacting me and the next thing you know, I got my release papers on my wedding day. There is no way that would have happened if there was an AEW. They probably would have approached me and said my suspension is up and asked if I am ready to go back to work. Without wanting to insult anybody on either side of the fence, any WWE or AEW talent, it would take, above all, an interesting scenario. It would take a story that would be fun to tell and also the stupidest amount of money. But they can save themselves a lot of money if they present a fun storyline. Now, what that is, I don’t know. I’m a pretty picky guy, especially at this point. There are more interesting people on the AEW side for me to wrestle and that’s because I’ve never wrestled them before.
These comments leave a “never say never” glimmer of hope, but it’s clear that Punk has no real desire to come back to the ring. He’s been able to carve out a nice living, bolstered largely by the fame he garnered while in the WWE. He’s written comics for Marvel, fought in the UFC, and acted in a few films.
He doesn’t need to come back, but audiences would likely love to see him lace up his boots for a farewell run. But what do you think? Would you like to see CM Punk return to the WWE or AEW? Or is he better off staying retired? Sound off in the comments!
