Welling Gives Animated “Smallville” Revival Update

While superheroes on the small screen is the norm now, with shows like Arrow Marvel’s Daredevil, proving to be huge hits, back in the early 2000s it was considered quite the risk. Even so, Warner Bros. took a chance on Miles Millar and Alfred Gough’s Smallville, an origin story for Superman, detailing his life growing up in small town Kansas.

And the show proved to be quite the hit, last ten seasons and paving the way for the next generation of superhero stories to dominate television screens. And the show still has a huge following that have been clamoring for more. This led to an “Season 11”, albeit in comic book form, that saw the introduction of characters like Batman, Nightwing, and Green Lantern, as well as a brief cameo on during the Arrowverse Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Things are going even further now, with a the oft-referenced animated series closer to realization that anyone imagined.

According to Screen Rant, whilst speaking at Fan Expo Vancouver, actor Tom Welling, the titular Clark Kent from the show, spoke on the possibility of an animated follow up, commenting that:

We’re working on an animated series that picks up right after our Smallville [Season 10], and, again, telling our own story and our vision is that we get Erica… it might be tough to get Allison [Mack]… but even Sam Jones III and Lionel Luthor is going to be a big part of that. John Glover wants to do it, we’ve already been into this. We’ve already gotten animation; we just don’t have the stories yet because Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] are busy doing Tim Burton-like movies. As soon as they are done with that, we’re going to do this. I want to be Clark’s voice, I want Erica to be Lois’ voice, that’s going to be the fun of it. I think there’s a story that Al and Miles are going to tell that’s individual and new and call it a Multiverse thing. But let’s see where it goes, and it’ll be fun.

One thing that’s clear is that most of the main cast of The CW‘s Smallville appears to be keen on returning, with even Lex Luthor himself, Michael Rosenbaum, often considered to be the best live-action iteration of the character, teasing the cartoon potential of the property. Whether it happens or not is still up in the air, but it certainly seems that the stars are aligning for this to become a reality.
