Sony Drops “Resident Evil” Reboot Featurette
Resident Evil remains one of the most popular franchises in media, with game remasters steadily releasing and a Netflix anime series which released over the summer. However, outside of the games, it is perhaps most well-known for the long-running action film series that starred Milla Jovovich. With that series finished after seven movies, it’s already being rebooted with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which will focus more on the horror roots of the property.
To that point, Sony has released a new featurette that looks at how the project came together. In fact, Johannes Roberts, who is both the director and screenwriter for the project, promises fans that this iteration of the famed game series will be more faithful to the source material.
To prove the point, the video provides side-by-side comparisons between the scenes from the film and the game that showcase how similar they are. And this is certainly welcome news for fans, as while the Jovovich-led films were generally well-received, they very much told their own story, really linked in name only.
This movie is an origin story of sorts to Capcom’s beloved survival horror video game franchise. As such it will be telling a unique story, but it won’t contradict established game lore. Rather, it will expand on the story and provide context for the game series, as it is being said that they exist in the same universe.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City will debut exclusively in cinemas on November 24th and stars Kaya Scodelario in the lead role as Claire Redfield. She will be joined by an impressive ensemble cast that includes Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, Neal McDonough as William Birkin, Avan Jogia as Leon S. Kennedy, and Lily Gao as Ada Wong.
