Developer Delays “Ghostwire: Tokyo” Until 2022
With the world’s major gaming companies, Sony and Microsoft, quickly switching their focus to the newest generation of systems, the consoles are quickly snatching up exclusives. However, not all news is good news, as Tango Gameworks has announced they are delaying the release of their highly anticipated PS5-exclusive, Ghostwire: Tokyo.
The game is a first-person action-adventure thriller, which follows a main character, who has psychic abilities (as well as sweet martial arts skills), investigating Tokyo after 99% of the population disappeared, seemingly without a trace. There is far more going on in the city, though, and the disappearances are rooted in something for more nefarious and supernatural.
Ghostwire was first announced by distributor, Bethesda, in June of 2019, with its launch supposedly planned for Fall 2021. But things don’t seem to be where the development team was hoping, and Tango Gameworks released statement explaining the situation and setting a new 2022 debut, though no specific month was provided.
The reason for the delay is to give the team behind the project more time to develop the story and the improve the gameplay and graphics. Simply put, for a variety of reasons, they fell behind, and rather than releasing a subpar product, ala the recent disaster the was Cyberpunk 2077, they are pressing pause, to not only provide the best possible content, but also to protect the workforce during these tumultuous times.
The response, while disappointed, has been good, with most praising them for their honesty and foresight. The pandemic ha led to an increase of activity in the gaming industry, and there has been a struggle to keep up, with several major developers, like Rockstar, kicking up controversy for forcing unrealistic deadlines and unfair/unsafe work conditions. Tango Gameworks is taking the correct approach with Ghostwire: Tokyo, however, and the goodwill they are getting will be worth it in the end and the survival/horror game will likely get a big response upon its release in 2022.
