New Trailer Drops For Grime, An Action RPG Where Your Character Has A Black Hole For A Head

Have you ever encountered an enemy in a video game and thought “Hey, that armor/weapon/ability would be super useful, I want it”? Well, apparently the developers of upcoming 2D action RPG Grime had exactly that feeling in mind when developing their game because they made it a central mechanic. A game we somehow missed on our annual list of games you shouldn’t overlook (probably because it’s effectively PC-exclusive unless you’re one of those weirdos still hoping Stadia is going to be a thing) Grime sees its stony black-hole headed protagonist using parries to absorb elements of the enemies it encounters and using those new abilities to progress to new areas or just kill monsters and their creepy friends with their own weapons in the ultimate “stop hitting yourself” power move.

In advance of its release next week, developers Clover Bite released a new cinematic trailer that gives a pretty good sense of the game’s atmosphere, tone, and gameplay loop as the statue with a black hole face progresses from carving apart smaller insectile creeps to confronting a massive boss-looking foe. It feels fairly grim and dark, like many ultra difficult action RPGs do, but there’s definitely something appealing about the mystery implied by the almost complete lack of story in the trailer. The main character literally drops in from the sky with no context for where it comes from or why it’s here, much less what this stony subterranean world with all its monsters and dead grasping hands is all about. It’s an intriguing enigma that is sure to win over fans who are used to piecing together lore and looking for obscure hints as to what it all means. And thankfully, we won’t have long to wait to start figuring it out, as the game releases on August 2nd.

So what do you make of Grime? Are you already looking forward to ripping off the claw from some creepy crawly and using it to tear through the other jerks that stand in your way? Any theories about why our protagonist has a black hole face or where all those reanimated hands came from? Anybody else feeling the irresistible urge to blast some Soundgarden now?
